Moving Interstate Prices

Shipping Container Moving Prices Australia

When weighing up the pros and cons of different removalist companies you may find that price is a huge part of the decision-making process. In fact, statistics say that price can be the main deciding factor in the decision-making process for up to 70% of people who are moving house. Of course, you don't want to sacrifice the quality of service at the expense of an ultra-cheap price so finding the right balance is essential.

Move interstate cheaply - Budget Self Pack Containers

We are often asked for a 'rough quote' or 'price guidance' for interstate container moving. It is difficult to give an accurate estimation of price because often, very similar projects will have quite different requirements and that will result in a significant difference in price.

We are able to offer cheap interstate moves because of the way in which we transport containers. Over long distances, transport by road (truck) is relatively expensive compared to transport by rail. We utilise the rail network to minimise moving costs and use trucks at either end of your move. Therefore, the closer that your address is to a depot in a main centre, the cheaper your move will be.

Comparing interstate moving prices - Melbourne to Perth

This can be illustrated by the following example comparing two very similar moves:

Move No. 1:  Richmond, VIC to South Perth, WA

Move No. 2: Richmond, VIC to Mandurah, WA

You may think that these two moves would be priced very similarly - they're both around 3,500 km to the destination address. The move to Mandurah though would actually cost around $500 more than the move to South Perth. This comes down to the distance both destination addresses are from the rail terminal in Perth (the portion of the transport that is completed by truck rather than rail).

South Perth is around 12 km from the rail terminal in Kewdale.

Mandurah is around 76 km from the rail terminal in Kewdale.

Because of the relatively high cost per km for the truck transport, the extra 64 km the container travels on a truck bumps up the price considerably. Bearing in mind that the truck makes two trips to Mandurah - one to deliver the loaded container and another to pick up the empty container after unloading, the difference in price makes more sense.

Why does it cost more to move to Perth?

Another thing you may notice below is that the cost to move to Perth from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide is much more that moving from Perth to any of these destinations. The reason is that the rail rates going to Perth are much higher than going out of Perth. This is due to Perth, Western Australia being a net importer of goods from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia - so the trains are full going into Perth and empty on the return trip.
